I believe Aaron Draplin said it best—it’s always the small, stuff you tend to remember most. It’s because that type of work always seems to be unfettered by corporate focus groups and critiques by middle managers. It’s less about work and more about having fun, which is what creativity should be about in the first place. And it seems to have the most impact. Every pro bono design I’ve created has been received graciously. A free logo you do for a friend’s new business. An album cover. A poster. I have taken this to heart in the years since reading Draplin’s book, and whenever free time to collaborate with a friend on a project, I jump at the chance.
